Patagonia Ready for First Marathon

The final touches are being made for the first ever Patagonian International Marathon, to be held in Torres del Paine National Park. More than 350 runners have registered to test themselves over the course of 10, 21, or 42 kilometers.
Athletes will be running both in and for Patagonia, with the event supporting the Reforestemos Patagonia program, which aims to help the national park recover from the devastating fires last summer. Over 100,000 trees have already been pledged by the community towards the initiative.
Event organizers hope to add an additional 2,000 trees through the runners sharing the message of caring for Patagonia. There is a particular forest for the marathon, which can be accessed online. Businesses and community groups are able to create their own forests as part of the Reforestemos Patagonia program.
“The Patagonian International Marathon will contribute to the sustainable development of one of the most beautiful places in Chile, positioning the Magallanes region before the world. Participants can enjoy nature and become aware of the need to protect it,” said Event Director Stjepan Pavicic. ”I have no doubt that this event will be consolidated as the most emblematic of Chile.”
Upon finishing the race, runners will be treated to a traditional Patagonian asado at the Hotel Las Torres.
While the marathon will be the first ever in Torres del Paine, organizing group are no strangers to the Patagonia region. The marathon follows on the back of the successful Patagonian Expedition Race.
Among the entrants will be the famed “Marathon Man”, Belgian Stefaan Engels, while Chile will have runners representing everywhere from Iquique to Tierra del Fuego. I Love Chile will also make an appearance in the race.
The event is supported by CONAF, SERNATUR, the Municipality of Torres del Paine, the Ultima Esperanza Chamber of Tourism as well as Hotel Las Torres, Hotel Rio Serrano, Cruceros Australis, Disal, Gatorade, Sportlife, Sodexho, Tierra Patagonia Hotel & Spa, Hotel Explora, Hotel Remote, Navimag and 110 Sport & Health Center.
The Patagonian International Marathon will take place on Sunday, September 23.
