A Fine Balance

Shortlisted for the Booker Prize in 2011, 'A Fine Balance' is the story of four people who are thrown together in 1970's India.

Struggling to make a living after the death of her husband and determined not to be forced into a second marriage by her pushy Parsi brother, Dina Dalal hires two tailors to sew for her and rents out a bedroom to the son of an old school friend.

As the cruel policies of slum clearances and enforced birth control bring chaos to the city, the four strangers, whose lives have become inextricably linked, find themselves crossing divides of caste, class and religion to form the most unexpected of friendships.
