Danish Summer Solstice

Last week we experienced the summer solstice; the longest day of the year, the peak of the summer before we all rush headlong into the dark hours again. Well that’s what the email to me from the ex-pat contact at work said whilst announcing I would get 17.34 (exactly) hours of daylight on the 21st. My view out of the apartment window of the sun burning brightly for that length of time was obscured by a grey and rainy sky, pretty much like it has looked every day since arriving in Denmark a month ago.

H. G. Wells in Ecuador, by Michael Wynn

In the second week of February 1949, three men were charged with provoking the death of more ten people in Ecuador. The method of their crime: creating a radio play based on H.G. Wells and then letting it loose on an unsuspecting public.
It was an incident far more sinister than the panics that followed the 1938 broadcast in America when Orson Welles had first dramatised H.G. Wells' War of the Worlds on radio. Not even the effect of a similar 1944 radio broadcast in Chile could compare when it came to the number of deaths and the level of devastation.

Journey to Nambija 1982. Part 2

Wed 24 August 1982
We arrive at El Tambo, a halfway house which could have been straight out of a bad western film. Probably the prostitutes had warned them of our impending approach as, despite being accompanied by M and J, our arrival was not greeted with any friendliness. – Learn from Juan that there is great rivalry between the miners and their many groups and cooperatives and this leads often leads to violence.- We hoped to rent a mule to carry our packs but despite the half dozen tied to a rail outside the house, none were available to us.
